RGLAP, the others are right, never give up hope. I've been a nurse in a nursing home for 20 years and I've seen more strokes than I care to mention. I can tell you this though, I've seen recovery where you thought there wasn't even hope. So don't give up and tell your mom not to give up either! Prayers do get answered. Good luck (and take care of yourself too!).

RGALP - hang in there honey. I am praying for you and your NLN family is doing the same. Take care of yourself otherwise you are no god to your Mother. Get rest, eat, and stay strong for her. You can do this - and you will get through it.

Thanks so much Rae, I know you can understand with what is going on in your life. It isn't easy. I know these things happen every day but when it happenes to you it is so hard to deal with.

Thanks for your encouragement.

And thanks to all the wonderful people that I've met here. Isn't it funny how you can feel close to people through a forum that you don't even know.

But I am so grateful for that

RGALP, I hate to be the neg. one here but I am honest- My Father has had several stokes that has sent him into comas, he has been "pronounced" dead several times and each time I was told not to get my hopes up. Each time, I sat and talked to him even though I was told that he could not hear me. I have diapered him, spoon fed him and even went as far as to fake his signatures on his will in order to protect his assets which I knew he would be needing again. Every time, and mind you at one point it was several months of no response at all, he has recovered. It takes time. A stroke is a giant bruise on the brain which can always shrink and heal and with time, your brain can learn new tasks and recover. I wish you the best of luck with your situation and your mother, Ronnie. However, I have to state, stop crying and get yourself busy. You are here in CA, I'm here in Fresno , when it is time, and you need some help- I can travel- seriously- Look into Family leave time. I am pretty sure that recent law has added elder care to "Family and Maternity Leave Act" so don't push yourself back to work when your energy needs to be focused on yourself so you can better care for your mom. If she has Kaiser, or even if she doesn't the local hospital in your area will have classes you can attend for free to get yourself informed about what type of rehabilitation facilities are in your area and what your long term plan of action will be. you mentioned that she has had had 10 years of health issues, I know it is hard to keep it together when all you want to do is ball up and cry but you need to contact some people and make sure that you have all of the correct legal documents on file with the hospital so that they are aware of your wishes and hers. Do not make any definite "yes or no" type answers when asked by anyone about DNR orders or wills on file because if your mom didn't prepare for this, you will have to make the choices and it is your legal right here in CA to have a say in her treatment. I will be checking back in here just to see if your reply with some questions- ask me anything- I have 2 mentally disabled parents that I have cared for my entire life and a mentally ill brother whom I have legal conservatorship of- I have no problem breaking the law when it comes to producing documents or providing a signature for a notary when it comes to family medical affairs, so don't hesitate to ask for help. You were right when you stated that "we are your other family" and I have your back on this. You are not alone, and as much as I would love to say that I know your mom will pull through and everyone's prayers will fix this, you need to expect the worst here so that anything less than the worst is a total relief. I am not a cynical atheist here, don't get me wrong, but you said you were alone and sometimes when the uncomfortable truths surface in life such as the loss of a parent or loss of the life that one once had, you end up even more alone because nobody knows what to say or how to act and it is easier to pray to God for help and have an honest faith that he will, but as someone with a strange faith and belief if God, please know that he has nothing to do with this. God did not choose to allow your mother to fall ill, nor is it God's will to see see you in such pain and sorrow; and for your sake, I hope that he power of prayer works here, but please do not allow yourself to believe that if your mother does not recover immediately that God has chosen this for you. Everyone else reading this, as we are praying for Ronnie's recovery, please pray for RGALP-pray that she will have the strength and the faith to remain strong and healthy so that she will be able to take care of herself and her mother once Ronnie is in recovery. [b]please don't reply with any defensive posts-I am not trying to offend anyone here and I will pre-apologize for upsetting anyone.
